Benefits of prickly pear

Prickly pear. That is the name given to the fruit of one of the most famous edible cactuses. In our country, it is also known as ''nopál''. And yes, if you were wondering, nopál flour is made from this dried succulent.
The prickly pear is an edible cactus whose former home was Mexico. But it gradually spread throughout the western lengths of South and North America and was transported to the rest of the world when that continent was settled. It thrives in Europe and Australia, and can also be found in India and parts of Africa. Nevertheless, Mexico, Bolivia and Brazil remain the main producers.
The prickly pear thallus is processed into vegetarian dishes and salads. But the main attraction is the large, bright red fruit. It resembles figs in texture and can be eaten fresh after peeling. The fruit contains plenty of seeds, but they are very hard. That might spoil the enjoyment. However, the leaves of the prickly pear are also interesting. These are used to garnish and flavour dishes. They also make a tasty pickle when dried. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid prickly pear. Otherwise, you can indulge as much as you like.
