Brazilian coffee
Brazil is one of the largest growers of plantation arabica coffee, and what is more, its production is considered the best in the world. That is thanks to the three climatic zones (equatorial, subtropical and temperate) with specific natural conditions in which the coffee trees are grown. Brazilian coffee is characterised by its mild and delicate flavour, offering a wide selection of various options. About three-quarters of total production comes from smallholders.
It is impossible to say how long the coffee trees have been grown in Brazil. Available sources give the year as 1727, but there are other information. In any case, we know that the first bushes were cultivated in the colony of Pará, then spread to the colonies of Maranhao, and then gradually to Sao Paulo, Mina Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Paraná, Espirito Santo, Bahia and Pernambuco. Brazil grows mainly arabica plantation coffee in many varieties (Bourbon, Murta, Maragogip and Botucato). The coffee trees grow without shade so the coffee fruit can ripen evenly.
