Dominican coffee
The Dominican Republic is known for its production of speciality coffees, which are often sold under the name Santa Domingo. Coffee lovers appreciate them for their rich body, lighter to medium acidity, distinctive aroma and earthy taste. Coffee from higher elevation sites tends to have higher acid content than others from lower elevation plantations.
There are seven coffee-growing regions in the Dominican Republic: Cibao, Barahona, Noroeste, Neyba, Sierra Sur, Sierra Occidental and Sierra Central. Approximately 90 % of Dominican coffee is arabica of the Typica variety, with Bourbon, Catuai, Caturra and Mundo Novo making up the remainder.
