Coffee beans - 100% Robusta

If you are looking for a coffee with an intense flavour and strong aroma, robusta is the right choice! Plantation coffee of the robusta variety is a guarantee of the highest quality. It has an obvious place of origin, plenty of processing information and is always freshly roasted. There is one more thing you should know - robusta contains approximately twice as much caffeine as arabica.

What is Robusta

Robusta coffee trees (Coffea canephora), or hefty coffee trees, are native to sub-Saharan Africa. They are enormous shrubs growing to a height of about 10 metres. They are more robust than arabica coffee trees and have a higher yield. They are planted by farmers at altitudes of 200-800 metres on not very fertile soil. As robusta is only slightly susceptible to pest and disease damage, it does not require frequent use of herbicides or pesticides. Robusta accounts for 30-40 % of world coffee production.

Robusta coffee cherries are usually processed either naturally (the berries are sun-decomposed and stripped of their skins after drying) or wet (the beans are first peeled and then fermented). Each process and its modification affects the taste and aroma of the resulting coffee.

The tones you recognise in robusta coffee can be woody and earthy, with a higher bitterness than we are used to in arabica. However, it is not uncommon to find traces of chocolate or nuts.

Main growing areas

Robusta is grown by farmers in Vietnam, Africa, India and Brazil. You can also buy quality beans from Indonesian or Ugandan producers.
