Origins
The history of Vietnamese coffee dates back to 1857 when French missionaries brought the first coffee plants to one of the most populous countries in the world. By the end of the 19th century, fields of green appeared on the northern plains of Vietnam and it soon became apparent that the Tay Nguyen region, known as the Central Highlands, offered the ideal conditions for coffee trees to grow and ripen their sweet fruit. As a result, Vietnam has become a major supplier of robusta and the second largest coffee producer in the world.
Connecting 3 geographical regions, the Central Highlands are situated at an altitude of between 200 -1,000m. It is renowned for its fertile soils and climate, which give coffee its unique character. It includes the town of Buon Ma Thuot, often referred to as the ‘Kingdom of Coffee’, where majority of the coffee is processed.
Robusta makes up the vast majority of coffee grown by farmers in Vietnam. It comes from the Coffea canephora coffee bush, which is known for its resistance to disease and its ability to grow at lower altitudes. Robusta contains more caffeine than arabica (from Coffea arabica plants), so the resulting drink tends to be more intense and full-bodied. The flavor profile of robustas often includes earthy notes with hints of dark chocolate and nuts.
Now, let’s take a closer look at the Wet Polished method. It refers to the special process of wet polishing coffee beans, which results not only in beautiful coffee beans, but also in a milder taste. This robusta in particular carries notes of cocoa beans, nuts, molasses, chocolate and brown spices.
Vietnam Robusta Grade 1 has been awarded the Grade 1 quality certificate, which is used to indicate coffees with a minimum number of defective coffee beans. All that’s left for you is to sample it!
