Origins
Hot cocoa powder is a carefully balanced blend of high-quality cocoa and cane sugar. In this case, flavored with a dash of natural raspberry flavor – but no need to worry. Our flavoring is derived from actual natural sources, mostly plants, through physical, enzymatic or microbiological processes. So when you smell raspberries in your hot cocoa, rest assured that the flavor really does come from raspberries.
Where are the other ingredients in this cocoa from? The powder is from the Dominican Republic and the cane sugar is from Paraguay. Both ingredients, cocoa beans and cane sugar, have been grown organically. They are, therefore, labeled organic and do not contain any harmful substances or residues.
Cocoa beans are harvested from evergreen cacao trees (Theobroma cacao). Native to South America. Cacao trees are now also grown in Ghana, Brazil and the Ivory Coast. They grow to a height of 5-8m, have large and long leaves and bloom pinkish-white flowers. These turn into fruits – yellow berries with seeds – cocoa beans. Harvesting the fruit is not easy. Neither is the path that the fruit has to take to become cocoa, or even eventually, chocolate. In the Dominican Republic, cacao trees are grown on 150,000 hectares. The quality of its production is considered one of the best in the world.
Sugar cane is often known as a raw material for sugar and rum production, but less is known about the plant itself. The perennial plant, with the Latin name Saccharum officinarum, can be up to 6m tall and 5cm thick. The stalks are soft on the inside and their pith contains up to 20% sugar. Sugar cane flowers in so-called panicles, the fruit is a grain. However, you will not see flowers or fruit on the plantations. They take away sugar from the plant, so farmers remove them. The first sugar cane was planted in Paraguay in 1549. But inefficient farming led to low yields. Until a few years ago, the local industry suffered from a lack of modern processing facilities. However, sugar production, and therefore sugar cane cultivation, seems to be a government priority in Paraguay now. At the end of the 20th century, sugar cane plantations covered some 70,000 hectares of land.
All the ingredients in the 42% Hot Cocoa Powder come from organic farming. The blend is flavored with a natural aroma that does not obscure the original taste of the ingredients, while also not causing heartburn or any other health reactions. Only lactose intolerant people should take care, because hot cocoa may contain traces of milk.
