Origin

Chocolate gets its name from the Aztecs. They called it xocolātl, or bitter water. The Spanish brought it to Europe and called it chocolate.

When it was first made is hard to guess. However, it is believed that the Mayans and Aztecs prepared the chocolate drink by stirring cocoa in warm water and adding peppers, honey or chilli. The cocoa itself, in the form of a powder or rather a paste, was discovered by archaeologists on fragments of vessels in the Colha region (present-day Belize, Central America). According to experts, the Mayans were drinking chocolate as early as around 600AD.

But the first mention of chocolate dates back to 1519, when Hernán Cortés observed the consumption of the cocoa drink on the shores of New Spain. 8 years later, he brought a recipe to Spain that seems to have started a worldwide chocolate revolution. However, it wasn't until the 18th century that people discovered that chocolate dissolved in milk tasted better than in water. And they waited until 1847 to make the first bar of chocolate.

How is chocolate actually made? The seeds of the true cacao tree (Theobroma cacao), a tree whose original home is the Amazon basin, are the starting point. After undergoing several days of fermentation, drying, pre-roasting and removal of the skins and sprouts, they go to the factories. The processed cocoa beans must first be crushed and roasted. This changes their color, taste and aroma. Grinding the beans produces cocoa mass, from which cocoa butter is extracted. This is also used to make chocolate. In addition, it produces the so-called press cake, which is finely ground into cocoa powder.

The chocolate itself then contains, depending on the desired taste and consistency, sugar, milk, cocoa butter, cocoa powder and a number of other ingredients. The mixture goes through emulsification, kneading, whisking, tempering and cooling. Finally, of course, it is packaged.

Now you know almost everything about chocolate. Finally, it remains to add that, although it is one of the delicacies that doctors recommend only on rare occasions, it contains many health benefits. It is rich in flavonoids, minerals (magnesium, potassium, sodium, zinc and iron) and, of course, vitamins D, B, A and E. It also contains caffeine and theobromine. Therefore, eating chocolate can increase mental well-being, support the body in fighting infections and civilization diseases.

As far as allergens are concerned, people with allergies to milk, cocoa and vanillin should be careful. This product may contain traces of nuts.
