Benefits of Acerola

Discover this Brazilian superfruit in its fine-powder form. Sadly, you won't be able to include it in your fruit bowl, but your body will thank you for every spoon you'll add to your diet. It's a vitamin bomb: Acerola, Guaraní cherry, or Barbados cherry, combines freshness, a pleasant sourness, and an armful of health benefits.

Acerola grows on evergreen shrubs or smaller trees. It loves plenty of sunshine and warmer temperatures, so it's no wonder it made its home in Brazil, the Caribbean, and Central America. However, it's gradually spreading globally and can be found in various subtropical and tropical regions across Africa, Asia, and Australia.

At first, the bush has to mature for about three to four years before its first yield, but after that, it can produce them almost all year round if all the required conditions are met. The acerola fruits are up to 3 cm in size and are very similar to the cherries we know from our climatic conditions. However, they look a little more robust and have three small triangular seeds in the centre of the yellow flesh.

Acerola (Latin Malpighia emarginata) has conquered the world with its incredible vitamin C content. One single cherry contains as much vitamin C as two large lemons. The flesh of the acerola is super sour, but you're unlikely to find this fruit raw. So, to preserve as much of the beneficial substances as possible (in addition to the aforementioned C, it's also vitamin A, calcium, potassium, and many others), the cherries are gently freeze-dried and then ground into a fine, light yellow powder. It's easily dissolved, making it a great ingredient in a variety of smoothies and other dishes. Even ordinary water can be turned into a delicious and refreshing drink, full of pleasantly sour flavors and without any of the distracting bitterness that's often associated with lemon water.

However, excersize caution when taking acerola, as the powder contains a very high amount of the aforementioned vitamin C – excessive consumption can lead to intestinal problems and headaches. Limit yourself to 1 teaspoon 3-5 times a week, with even smaller doses for children. In smaller doses, it's also suitable for pregnant women. In short, it's a handy dietary supplement that can wonderfully support our health.
