Benefits of cardamom
Can you imagine Indian cuisine without cardamom (elaichi)? Indians, Nepalese or Bhutanese, for whom it is a home treasure, certainly not. And it is not just for the taste of this spice, but for its other qualities.
Cardamom, of which Central America's Guatemala is currently the largest producer, has a slightly spicy citrus flavour. It is also the proud third most expensive spice in the world - after saffron and vanilla.
There are two types of cardamom. The green variety is more common and has tiny grains in its smaller berries with a sweet and spicy finish. Its black counterpart is rarer, larger and has a more intense pungent taste.
It is rich in iron and manganese and is ideal not only for flavouring dishes but also as part of tea blends.
