Build a house, beget a son and plant a tree. This saying is true all over the world. But do you know what tree should be planted in the Moluccas? It would be (according to a tradition that goes back thousands of years) only the clove root tree.
Everyone knows the clove. Small, woody spice with a stalk and a tiny crown on its head. But who knew it came from a tree? It is, in fact, the dry calyxes with buds from the clove root. This tree is native to one part of Indonesia - the Moluccas. This archipelago is known for its rich sources of various rare spices. In the past, the clove was highly prized, which is why the area of Moluccas has often been an unwanted battleground in battles for a monopoly over the sale of this valuable commodity. Nowadays, cloves can be found in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Brazil. Nonetheless, Tanzania is the top producer.
Clove is a versatile helper and also works well in the fight against pesky insects. Grandmotherly advice recommends putting a few sticks of cloves in bowls of water and placing them by the windows. That will prevent flies and other unwelcome guests from the insect kingdom from unwanted intrusion into our homes. The role of cloves in the kitchen is probably unnecessary to discuss. Its intoxicating aroma and taste are the basis for many sweet dishes or hot alcoholic and soft drinks. In Indian and Chinese gastronomy, it is added to spicy meat mixtures and sauces.
Clove has no recorded side effects, but as with everything, it is recommended to be used moderately.
