Benefits of Cranberry (stack with leaves)
This Nordic beauty is especially famous for its fruits. Everyone has probably tasted the deep red berries that give the cranberry its name. There are plenty of recipes for processing them, which is perhaps why its stems and leaves are forgotten.
Vaccinium vitis-idaea, as the Latin name goes, refers to an evergreen, small creeping shrub growing to just 20 centimetres. It has oval-shaped green leaves and red berries, which often lead people to confuse the cranberry with the marshberry. They are similar in appearance and flavour, but apart from their occurrence, they differ mainly in the substances they contain and, therefore, in their effects on our health.
The cranberry is a typical plant of the Nordic countries. You can even find it in the Arctic tundra across America, Europe and Asia. It prefers low-humidity habitats with peaty soil. It often grows in clusters of several plants and can spread over a relatively large area. The fruit is used to make alcoholic beverages, marmalades or ice cream. However, in traditional medicine, it is the leaf buds that play a major role. It makes a tasty infusion that can also be used for poultices. However, its consumption should not be prolonged. High doses and use beyond the recommended six to eight weeks can cause nausea and other intestinal problems. Therefore, we always advise giving the body a short break. People with liver disease, young children and pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a doctor.
