Benefits of elder

All areas of human activity are evolving - even medicine. But why abandon what has been proven over the years? And we are talking about a good number of years. After all, traces of elderberries were found in prehistoric people from the Stone Age, and even our ancestors knew they were beneficial.

Elderberries are small dark blue to black and ripen during August. People have been using them for their beneficial properties since ancient times, and the "founder of medicine" Hippocrates wrote odes about them.

They are more common in the northern hemisphere and are abundant in Europe and North America.

According to legend, the spirit of a witch or wizard lives in every elder tree. If a person wants to pick the berries or cut the bush down directly, they must say a magical incantation, otherwise great evil may befall them. These rumours are probably based on the fact that there are many kinds of elder trees, and very few of them have edible fruit. Some berries even contain small amounts of cyanide, which can be fatal if consumed in large quantities and over a long time. However, the elderberries we mentioned are fortunately among the honourable exceptions that will not endanger your life.

On the contrary, they have a very intense, pleasantly sweet and sour flavour, and there are uses for them from homemade wines and liqueurs to syrups and teas.

Elderberries are recommended to be eaten in dried or cooked form, and if eaten regularly, it is best to take a short break after three months, after which you can continue to consume them.
