Benefits of Eyewort

We give nice nicknames to what we like. That is probably why the Euphrasia officinalis is called, for example, the eyewort or eyebright. That is right, "eye" plays a significant role in these names. Why? You will find out in a moment.

Eyewort is an annual herb, growing to a height of about 25 centimetres, and has ovate leaves with pointed serrations. Its two-petalled flower is worthy of note. It is white or purple and has an unmistakable yellow spot on the underside. It can be seen from July to October. Equally interesting is the fine root system of the skylight, which allows for a semi-parasitic way of life. By attaching itself to the roots of other plants, it draws from them some of the inorganic substances needed for its growth.

This popular herb can be found almost all over Europe, but the number of its habitats is decreasing. It is sensitive to the purity of groundwater. It requires moist soil, so it thrives in meadows or peat bogs.

The flowers and flowers contain glycosides, essential oils, tannins and flavonoids, and can also be a source of vitamin C and provitamin A.

The herb can be used to make decoctions and infusions for internal and external use, and recipes for ''safflower wine'' can also be found in herbaria.
