Benefits of Galega
Goat's rue has failed in the agricultural and economic sphere, but in folk medicine, it has been in the limelight since the Middle Ages. The dried stem of this plant can work wonders.
Goat's rue is a perennial herb (up to one metre tall) with white, purple or blue bell-shaped flowers. It usually grows several plants and thrives in places with organically rich soil. The Goat's rue, Latin Galega officinalis, was originally found in the Middle East. Today, you can find it almost all over Europe, North and South America and Asia. The reason for this spread is its originally purely economic purpose. It was grown as cattle feed and as a means of increasing milk production in cows, sheep and goats. However, it was soon discovered that fresh Goat's rue leaves contain harmful substances that adversely affect the taste of the milk and can even harm the animals.
Fortunately, these substances vanish when heated, so only the dried leaves have always been used in natural medicine. It retains its health benefits, and even breastfeeding mothers do not have to worry about the changing flavour of the milk. The infusion is most often prepared from the stems. That can be consumed in reasonable doses for up to eight weeks. There are no known side effects, only in the case of diabetics, and people with a haematopoietic disorder, it is advisable to inform the treating physicians in advance.
