Benefits of Galium
When we say ''svízel'' (the name of this herb and a word meaning trouble), everyone imagines some kind of hardship or difficulty. But with the herb, it is just the opposite. Although it is a relatively uncommon plant, it is ready to do wonders for our health.
In folk medicine, galium is called a virgin's bedstraw. It was believed that the Virgin Mary used it to make a bed for the baby Jesus. Although this is unlikely to be true, as galium never grew freely in the area around Israel, it was commonly used in earlier times to fill mattresses.
Its homeland is Europe (including the British Isles) and parts of the northeastern USA. The best-known of its herbs are Lady's bedstraw and Cleavers. The most striking difference between the two is the colour of the flowers - while Lady's bedstraw blooms golden, Cleavers has white to greenish petals.
Natural healing interest in this plant waned for a long time, and galium was seen more as a weed. In recent decades, however, it has come to the fore again for its health benefits. Some use its seeds as a coffee substitute, but most often its dried stalks are used to make a brew suitable for external and internal use.
The beverage can be consumed in the long term but is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
