Benefits of Gentian
If a plant has had an unwavering place in traditional medicine for 2,000 years, then there can be no argument about its benefits to our health. Even more so when European grandmothers and experts in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic teachings agree.
The yellow gentian, Gentiana lutea in Latin, prefers higher altitudes. It grows in mountain meadows throughout central and southern Europe, as well as in North America and China. It is a sturdy and relatively tall herb with bright yellow, pinnate flowers and large leaves with prominent veining.
It was formerly believed that the root of gentian acted as an antidote for various poisonings. That is one of the reasons why it caught on so quickly in the New World. Its powers were used to counteract the initial reactions of Europeans to the excessive use of the newly discovered tobacco. Although it no longer serves this purpose, the gentian's ability to flatten digestion and combat digestive ailments has become widely known.
Since the Middle Ages, various aperitifs and digestives have been made from its rhizome, and it is still a component of several brands of liqueurs. In folk medicine, however, the predominant treatment was in the form of tincture and decoction. The root was collected regularly in autumn, and the subsequent slow drying enhanced its aroma and specific bitter taste.
Normally, one to two cups of infusion a day for a maximum of eight weeks is sufficient. After that, we always advise a break for several weeks. Pregnant and breastfeeding women ought to consult their doctor first.
