Benefits of hawthorn
Do you know what a bride's bouquet looked like in ancient Greece and Rome? Not lilies or roses - it was hawthorn. In those days, it was believed to scare away evil spirits. And there was something to it since it is known to this day.
Hawthorn is a thorny deciduous shrub of higher height (sometimes said to be a tree). It was originally native to northern Europe but gradually spread to other parts of the temperate zone. It is thus commonly found wild in our area.
Its flowers are pink or white and appear in May. Almost everything is used from the hawthorn - leaves, flowers and fruit. They are reminiscent of rose hips in colour and shape.
It is recommended to dry all parts of the plant before processing. This process is carried out very slowly in the shade so that the important substances are preserved.
Whatever you use from Hawthorn, the effects are the same. The most common way to consume it is to make a brine, which can taste slightly bitter, but when combined with honey, you can fine-tune the drink to your liking.
