Benefits of Ironwort

Have you ever spent a holiday in Crete? Maybe you have spotted a mountain treasure on your wanderings and did not even know it. Ironwort is a relatively inconspicuous herb that can be easily overlooked, but in the world of phytotherapy, the name has held a firm position for centuries.

The name malotira (Sideritis syriaca in Latin) comes from Italian and loosely translated means "the bad goes out". The Czech name of the ironwort (hojník horský), on the other hand, refers to the plant's ability to heal wounds. In earlier times, it was used by field doctors to treat wounded soldiers.

Ironwort grows exclusively on Crete, although its relatives can be found elsewhere on the Balkan Peninsula and, exceptionally, in some Asian regions. It suits the dry Cretan climate and the clean environment of mountain areas above 1000 metres. It can grow up to 50 centimetres high and has tiny yellow flowers.

Mountain tea is also called shepherd's tea. However, drinking a decoction of the mountain plant has long been a matter for more than just peasants. It is still consumed daily by a large percentage of Greeks, not only as a beverage but also as a very tasty and pleasantly aromatic condiment that is wonderful in sauces. Thanks to its captivating scent, reminiscent of sage, it is also popular in the cosmetics industry, for example, as a frequent ingredient in perfumes.

Ironwort has been under the scrutiny of scientific research several times. Experts have repeatedly shown high levels of flavonoids and tannins, which can have a positive effect on the body's defences and metabolism when used over a long period. The Greeks even rank the use of this herb among the causes of their longevity. In addition, prepared Greek mountain tea has a delicious sweet flavour with pleasant herbal undertones, so a cup a day will become an event you look forward to.
