Benefits of moringa
It is strange how proven things are forgotten and only come to light again after some time. Moringa, or the stick tree, was highly valued in ancient Egypt, Ayurvedic teachings, and also in ancient Greece and Rome. Yet, it is only now experiencing its renewed glory.
But there is much more to the moringa. Not for nothing is it called the miracle tree of Africa. It originates there, especially in the southern part of the continent. It can also be found in South-East Asia and South America. India, for instance, is a major producer nowadays and prides itself on its high quality and use in Ayurveda.
A moringa is a smaller, slender tree which produces long, narrow pods. These hang from the branches like drumsticks, hence its popular name.
It is a nutritional miracle. It was named Plant of the Year by the US National Institutes of Health in 2008. In Africa, almost every part is used. Oil is pressed from the seeds contained in the pods, and the pods themselves are then eaten in raw, cooked and dried form. Even its flowers are edible. The dried leaves are made into an infusion or ground and used directly as a fine powder. It has a deep green colour and dissolves easily in juice or water.
The infusion of leaves and powder has quite a pleasant herbal taste and can be enjoyed without restriction.
