Forget about a gentle pinch to the cheek. A permanent blush can be made with the mullein. At least that is what women believed in old times and rubbed the leaves of this plant on their cheeks. But the mullein can give you health not only in this figurative sense.
Verbascum densiflorum is a biennial herb reaching up to 2 metres. Its stems are covered with fine hairs, and from May to September they are crowned with flowers of a beautiful yellow colour. Thanks to its minimal growth requirements, you can find it almost anywhere. In gardens, along paths and in meadows or woodland edges. It is commonly found throughout Europe but can also be found on the American continent. It is called Peter's Cane or King's Candle.
The ancient Romans used it as a long-burning torch, and records indicate that it continued to serve this function during the Klondike Gold Rush. The divining rod had other practical uses in earlier times. For example, its seeds contain rotenone - a substance which can cause stunting or even poisoning in fish. Therefore, members of Indian tribes used them to facilitate fishing in shallow waters. The flowers were then used to make dye or added as a flavouring in liqueurs. The flowers, however, were mainly in the sights of folk healers. Today, they are still used to make drops or syrups, or the popular infusion. It has a delicious honey flavour and is suitable for all in reasonable doses except for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
