Benefits of sage
Even when inventing the name for this herb, our ancestors knew who they were dealing with. Why else would they have given it the Latin name salvia officinalis, based on the word ''salvere'', or saviour?
As they say - nomen omen, the name determines the fate.
The sage is incredibly rich in history. Did you know that Charlemagne, the first medieval Roman emperor, ordered that for the good of the empire, this useful herb must be grown on every farm? The indigenous peoples of the Americas used sage to smoke out evil forces. In the Middle Ages, it was used with three other plants to stop the spread of the plague.
Sage is a perennial herb with a greenish-grey colour. It was originally found mainly in the Mediterranean and Asia Minor. However, it has spread very quickly and can now be found nearly anywhere in the northern hemisphere.
Because of its distinctive and unmistakable aroma, it is often added to sauces or meat. It is also popular in the production of essential oils. However, it is commonly used in the preparation of herbal infusions, both in fresh and dried form.
In reasonable moderation, you do not have to worry about consuming it and can enjoy all its benefits.
