Benefits of thyme
You cannot go to sleep? And have you tried putting a sprig of thyme under your pillow? It is said to help, but (in the past) this herb has performed a much more important task. In ancient Rome, a bath of thyme was supposed to save lives after administering poison, a quite common case in those days.
Thyme comes from the Latin word for courage. That is why it was put in soldiers' gear in ancient times, to protect and give them courage. A lighted bundle of the herb was used to smoke dwellings and temples, preventing evil spirits from entering. The Egyptians used it in the embalming process for a change.
Originally, you would have found thyme in the Mediterranean region, where it still plays an important role in their cuisine. But it soon spread to Central and Eastern Europe because of its ease of cultivation and many health benefits.
It is a medium-sized herb with small leaves. You can often find different flavours - lemon thyme, for example, is excellent in the kitchen. The leaves are used to extract thymol - a substance you will find in mouthwashes, for instance, to freshen the breath.
Although we know thyme mainly as a spice, it can also be used to make a delicious infusion. However, as with all herbs, approach its consumption in moderation.
