Benefits of turmeric
Indian saffron and golden spices. That is what turmeric is called. Many people believe it is an exotic flavouring that (perhaps) they have never even had at home. However, if you like to use curry powder, you have already fallen under the spell of turmeric.
We all know it as a fine powder of yellow-orange colour. However, turmeric is very similar to ginger. The popular spice is made by grinding the dried rhizome of the long turmeric tree. It grows mainly in India but it is also found in Sri Lanka Jamaica, China, Peru and Indonesia.
The most potent part of turmeric is probably the antioxidant curcumin. It and the plant as a whole have been the focus of much research in recent years. Science has thus helped to confirm what Ayurveda and traditional Chinese folk medicine have long known. Turmeric is, in short, a golden miracle for our health.
Flavouring food with turmeric is not difficult. It is the main ingredient in curry spices, and its spicy, slightly bitter taste is emblematic of Indian or Thai cuisine. But if you want to try the powder in its pure form, we recommend combining it with black pepper and perhaps coconut fat. The resulting benefits will be even more pronounced. Also extremely popular now is the so-called golden milk, meaning milk in which you dissolve cardamom, ginger, chilli and turmeric.
Turmeric is not harmful when consumed sensibly. Only pregnant women should be cautious as this spice can promote contractions.
