Ingredients
Dandelions 100%Brew & Taste
Dandelion coffee is, of course, not real coffee from the seeds of the coffee plant. Nevertheless, it has an excellent taste that can be described as slightly bitter, slightly sweet and pleasantly nutty.
As with regular coffee, you can experiment with different ways of preparing it. Some people cover it with hot water, others prefer to prepare it in an automatic coffee machine, French press or chemex. Try it for yourself.
Origins
Everyone must have seen a dandelion at some point. The yellow-flowering herb is widespread throughout the temperate zones of the northern hemisphere, with some species even appearing in the tropics. This perennial is not very popular with gardeners, who consider it a weed. It grows to a height of 5-40cm, has leaves that lie close to the ground and blooms on long, hollow stems. After flowering, the little yellow suns turn into white, fluffy balls. The fruits of the dandelion are in fact the achenes on fine pads of fluff. Whoever blows on them spreads the seeds far and wide.
Dandelion was first described by Carl Linné, who later reclassified the complex genus. However unclear the botanical classification of this plant, no one has doubted its abilities for hundreds of years. Herbalists can never get enough of stems, leaves and of course the root of dandelion. It contains the tannins taraxacin and taraxaterin, phytoncins and special starches. Its caloric value is very low, yet it is sweet, so it can be used as a substitute for sugar or fat. Inulin is known to benefit the intestinal microflora.
In addition, consuming dandelion root has the ability to aid overall fitness, including immunity and metabolism. Some sources recommend use during detoxes and to tune up liver processes.
Now all that remains is to explain how dandelion coffee is made. The tough root of the specially cultivated plant needs to be unearthed from the ground, perfectly cleaned and dried. It is then chopped and roasted, and finally ground by the manufacturer. Dandelion root coffee contains no added substances and is also caffeine-free.
