Benefits of ashwagandha
It is hard to say whether the Ayurvedic masters got the name of this herb right. It translates as "horse scent". And while that may not sound very appealing to you, it certainly should not put you off.
Ashwagandha is one of the great prides of Ayurveda. Its effects have been known for about 2500 years and traditional Indian medicine really cannot get enough of it. It is also the horses that they do not seem to get enough of when describing it - in addition to the aforementioned ''horse scent' that the root of the plant gives off, it is supposed to have the ''power of a stallion''. So-called Indian ginseng is a typical example of an adaptogenic plant, which in short means a huge benefit for the body in coping with stressful situations and zero or minor side effects.
Apart from Ayurveda, it was very well-known to the ancient inhabitants of Africa and America. Its health benefits are also mentioned in indigenous Chinese folk medicine.
Ashwagandha (Czech ''withania snodárná'') is an evergreen herb with yellow-orange fruits. It is not demanding of conditions and therefore occurs wild in a wide range of tropics and subtropics.
The most commonly used part of the plant is its root, which is dried and then ground into a fine powder. It will taste delicious on its own dissolved in water, but combining milk with honey takes it to a whole new level.
However, pregnant and breastfeeding women and people with autoimmune diseases should avoid this herb altogether.
