Origins
If we say dandelion, you'll definitely know what we're talking about. But do you really know everything about this plant, other than the fact that we hate to see it in our gardens? The ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans already knew about its benefits, and dandelion coffee is mentioned in books from the mid-19th century. At the time it was seen as a substitute for real coffee, but today we value it for different reasons.
Dandelion root (Taraxacum) contains the tannins taraxacin and taraxaterin, as well as phytoncins and inulin, which is a substitute for starch. This gives the root a very low calorific value, yet it tastes sweet. Its consumption promotes normal digestion, maintains normal cholesterol levels and normal liver and stomach function. Dandelion root also acts as a powerful antioxidant.
To make dandelion coffee, 3-4 years old, specially cultivated plants need to be harvested. The roots are 13mm in diameter and resemble carrots in appearance. Spring harvesting ensures a sweeter and less bitter taste, while roots harvested in autumn tend to be richer in flavor and also more bitter. After cleaning, the roots are cut lengthwise and stored in a warm, dry place for two weeks. Then the material needs to be chopped finely and cooked.
We added just a few extra drops of natural vanilla flavoring. It doesn't contain synthetic ingredients, so it doesn't cause any health problems, including heartburn, for example. The natural flavoring gives the coffee an extra attractive tone.
You can easily prepare chamomile root coffee with vanilla by pouring 100ml of hot water over a teaspoon of coffee. Add your favorite spices such as cinnamon, fennel or cardamom or flavor the drink with maple syrup. You can also try coconut milk or cream. It's worth testing the "coffee-like" preparation – on a filter, in an AeroPress or even in a coffee machine. We believe you will soon discover your favorite process and come to love dandelion coffee as much as we do.
