Origins
The east coast of central Africa is characterized by volcanoes, lakes and national parks and reserves. The climate is warm, rainfall abundant and sunshine above average. Tanzania is, in short, the ideal country for growing the Theobroma cacao trees. It is therefore no wonder that great cocoa comes from there.
But cocoa has a long way to go before it makes it from plantation to chocolate. The cocoa beans, which are the most important for its production, need to be extracted, fermented, dried and pre-roasted. In this state, they are sent to the processing plant. The beans must then be crushed and roasted. The next step is grinding. The resulting cocoa mass is transformed into cocoa butter and the cocoa powder. Both raw materials are then used to make chocolate.
Chocoholics may be interested to know that although the first references to chocolate drinks date back to the early 16th century, the first bar of chocolate did not see the light of day until the late 19th century. Since then, demand has been growing worldwide. The biggest chocolate lovers are in Switzerland, the UK and Ireland.
Chocolate is one of the most digestible and nutritious foods, which is why it is popular with athletes and hard-working people alike. American soldiers rationed it during World War II. And today, astronauts are equipped with chocolate on their travels.
High-quality chocolate has been shown to contain vital vitamins D, B, A and E and a wide range of antioxidants. It is also extremely rich in the minerals magnesium, sodium, potassium, calcium, zinc or iron. Caffeine can also be found in small quantities. The interplay of all these substances helps chocolate consumers to maintain a good mood, induce feelings of calm and even happiness. Casanova, mentioned in the introduction, attributed aphrodisiac effects to chocolate. If we stick to the facts, we can say that eating chocolate can promote overall health, reduce the risk of certain ailments and support the body in fighting infections, for example.
