Benefits of shatavari
Do you know "the woman with a hundred husbands"? Well, you should. There is no need to go to the tabloids because that is what they call Shatavari, or wild asparagus, in traditional Ayurvedic texts. And if there is a plant made for the fairer sex, it is this one.
For Shatavari, we would have to go quite far. It grows mainly in the Himalayan region of India and Nepal, as well as in Sri Lanka and parts of North Africa.
Although it is a wild asparagus, let us not think of it as a classic asparagus. This perennial mountain plant reaches a height of 1-2 metres and has straight, slightly hooked spines at the end. Its flowers are white, and the fruit resembles larger pinheads of purple to black colour.
Virtually, all parts of wild asparagus are processed, from the leaves to the roots.
Ayurveda has known the powers of Shatavari for over a thousand years, often in the form of infusions, tonics or ground powder. You can take it without any particular restriction in the recommended dosage of 3 - 5 g per day. In the case of a long-term higher dose, weight gain may be a side effect, so beware. Pregnant women should also be careful with their consumption.
