Taste & Crema

The coffee from Burundi is said to have great potential. Its wild yet subtle notes make it quite the unique roast. After tasting it, we can clearly recognize a captivating harmony of citrus fruits accompanied by a hint of cinnamon. This coffee is perfectly suited to the preparation of a single origin espresso. Its crema is compact and wonderfully fluffy.

Origins

Burundi is a country with 17 provinces that lies between Rwanda, Congo and Tanzania. Its climate is influenced by its proximity to the equator and its altitude of 800-2000m. As a result, the area has favorable conditions for agriculture, which the vast majority of the population uses for their livelihood. The country's most important export is coffee, which is skyrocketing on world markets.

Burundi cultivates mainly the high-quality Bourboun variety. Coffee plants (Coffea arabica) were brought to the country by the Belgians, who governed Burundi until 1962. It was not until after the civil war in 2006 that private processing plants became established in the Central African state. Small-scale farmers typically tend 300-400 coffee plants, harvesting them continuously throughout the growing season, which lasts from June to September, and usually avoid using machinery. They process the cherry-like fruits of the coffee trees with the so-called washed or wet method.

The farmers remove the red pulp by pushing it (together with water) through special crushing plates. Fermentation takes place in water overnight, after which the coffee beans are dried. Local people use 'African beds' – raised, wiry beds on which the coffee is piled up to a maximum height of 5cm. It's important to keep turning the coffee over, otherwise it will mold.

We roast our coffee only after your order to keep it as as fresh and fragrant as possible.

Flavour and aroma

More sparingly roasted coffee offers a richer and more complex flavour profile. It retains more authentic nuances specific to the growing region, including fruity, floral or nutty notes.

Health benefits

In particular, quality coffee roasted to its ideal profile may contain higher levels of antioxidants such as chlorogenic acid and other phenolic compounds. These substances have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Unroasted premium coffee is also gentler on the stomach, as it contains fewer acids that can irritate.

Environmental friendliness

Plantation coffee is often grown with greater respect for the environment, with an emphasis on sustainable cultivation and fair trade, which can have a positive impact on growers and their communities.

Coffee packaging preview

Our quality aluminum packaging lacks any bold graphics, as we’d rather focus on the taste of our coffee. It always comes fresh thanks to degassing valve, which releases the gases that occur after roasting. Thanks to the hermetic seal, this container helps the contents further keep their freshness and protect them against humidity, light or foreign odors.

Instructions for preparation

Grind your coffee according to your preferred method.
Use 14ml of water per 1g of coffee. For 1 cup of coffee use 7g.
Add your coffee and pour over with boiled water (95°C).
