Origins
"Cocoa is the backbone of the Ghanaian economy," says Yaa Peprah Amekudzi, a woman dedicated to supporting cocoa farming communities and involving women in its production, among many other experts. Ghana's cocoa industry employs around 800,000 families in 6 of its 10 regions. The crop brings in around $2 billion a year to the country's budget, making it a major contributor to government revenue and GDP. But cocoa and its products are also loved by Ghanaians themselves. It makes excellent cocoa powder and chocolate.
The cacao tree (Theobroma cacao) was reportedly brought to Ghana by blacksmith Tetteh Quarshie in 1895 when he returned to his farm from Papua New Guinea. He is said to have brought the cocoa beans in his pocket, and legend has it, that they came specifically from the island of Fernando Po Bioko. Trees bearing yellow or reddish berries had spread rapidly in Ghana. So much so that by the end of the 19th century, Ghana began exporting them. Between 1911 and 1976, Ghana was even one of the leading suppliers of cocoa, accounting for 30-40% of world production.
Given the importance of cocoa, the Ghanaian government took control of its cultivation, harvesting, production and export. Today, Cocobod (Ghana Cocoa Board) is in charge of everything related to Ghanaian cocoa, as well as several other organizations that control, among other things, the use of fertilizers on plantations, the processing of cocoa beans and control the quality of the cocoa itself.
Cocoa has a long production cycle. Trees in Ghana typically take 5-15 years to bear fruit. The fruits must be cut from the trees by farmers, broken up and the beans themselves removed. These are then fermented for 6-7 days and then left to dry in direct sunlight for the same period. Finally, the cocoa is sorted, packaged and transported for sale.
