Taste & Crema

This coffee is best suited for filter or filter coffee machines. This form of preparation helps this light roast best retain its unique taste profile. You’ll be surprised by a slight sourness in each sweet sip with caramel undertones. As with most coffees for filter, the crema is mild and less distinct than with espresso coffees. Costa Rica San Rafael Tarrazu offers a light, more clear brew with pure, caramel-like aroma.

Origins

Another delicious plantation coffee from Central America – Costa Rica is one of the countries that have perfected coffee cultivation and production to near perfection. High-quality coffee accounts for 25 percent of foreign export earnings, plantations employ a large portion of the population, and the country benefits greatly from its unique agricultural research center.

Coffee cultivation began in Costa Rica in 1779. It quickly became a central crop and a driving force in local history. Income from the sale of coffee also paid for the first railroad connecting the Atlantic coast states, the Ferrocarril al Atlántico, for example. Equally useful were the profits from the plantations in the construction of the National Theatre in San Jose. It is certainly not without interest that Costa Rica takes great pride in the quality of its coffee. That is why, for example, it has completely banned the cultivation of inferior robusta.

The unique taste of Costa Rican coffee is largely due to the volcanic soils and waters of the Pacific. The tropical sun gives it its strength, the moist wind its mildness. Tarrazu is located about 70km south of the capital city of San Jose, in pristine countryside surrounded by mountains. Coffee is an essential source of livelihood for the people there, and they pay great attention to its cultivation and processing. The fruit of the coffee trees, red berries the size and appearance of cherries, are harvested several times during the ripening period. In the case of the San Rafael variety, they are processed by washing, which involves removing the pulp and skins, fermenting them in water and then drying them. Emphasis is also placed on the final sorting according to the quality and size of the beans.

Coffee packaging preview

Our quality aluminum packaging lacks any bold graphics, as we’d rather focus on the taste of our coffee. It always comes fresh thanks to degassing valve, which releases the gases that occur after roasting. Thanks to the hermetic seal, this container helps the contents further keep their freshness and protect them against humidity, light or foreign odors.

Instructions for preparation

  1. Coarsely grind your coffee.
  2. Use 14ml of water per 1g of coffee. For 1 cup of coffee use 7g.
