Origins
For Nicaragua, coffee is a crucial part of its history and economy. The first major boom in the coffee industry dates back to around 1870 when coffee was the country's main export crop. The second milestone came in 1992 when farmers planted coffee far more extensively than other crops. Although coffee faces many issues in the local conditions, people still care for it with great attention. It is evidenced, for example, by the fact that in 2019, Nicaraguan scientists developed a super-resilient coffee plant that thrives at high altitudes and shows significant yields. If you are wondering, this hybrid has been named Starmaya.
But back to the Nicaragua SHG Esteli coffee. It was grown in the Nueva Segovia region, located northwest of the country near the border with Honduras. It is interesting for its mountainous geography and the preserved tropical forest covering the high hills.
At its centre lies the town of Villa de San Antonio de Pavi de Estelí (Estelí for short), inhabited since the late 17th century by a group of Spaniards fleeing from pirates. It is in Estelí that the cooperative Las Diosas, made of four smaller organizations employing 360 women, is based. The cooperative works closely with Fundacion Entre Mujeres (FEM), one of Nicaragua's most respected women's rights companies. In addition to growing coffee plants, the women of Las Diosas are involved in activities such as honey and wine production. Thanks to the agricultural training they receive as part of FEM's support, they produce coffee with respect for nature. And even though they have to contend with frequent droughts, earthquakes, hurricanes, and landslides, they send out coffee of exceptional quality to the world.
The harvest in Nicaragua happens between April and July. The coffee cherries are processed by washing, and the coffee is mostly dried in direct sunlight. As a result, the flavor retains a pleasant fruity note that complements the chocolate notes beautifully.

Coffee packaging preview
Our quality aluminum packaging lacks any bold graphics, as we’d rather focus on the taste of our coffee. It always comes fresh thanks to degassing valve, which releases the gases that occur after roasting. Thanks to the hermetic seal, this container helps the contents further keep their freshness and protect them against humidity, light or foreign odors.
