Ingredients

100 % Arabica

Taste & Crema

A smooth, sweet, full-bodied coffee that will appeal to both explorers of new pleasures and seasoned caffeine geeks. Cuba Serrano Superior is less acidic than the high mountain varieties. It's characterized by a dark and distinctive taste of hot chocolate and caramel. As with all high-quality 100% Arabicas, the crema is thick and compact when extracted correctly.

Origins

The Sierra Maestra is located on the southern coast of Cuba. Its highest mountain (and the highest mountain in all of Cuba), Pico Turquino, lies at the altitude 1974m. The soil is rich in copper, manganese, chromium and iron. Cuban coffee, therefore, has an exceptional flavor. The most common varieties found in Cuba are Bourbon, Typica, Caturra and Catui & Catimor. Coffee plans are harvested by hand from July to December.

Their red fruits, similar in size and appearance to cherries, are processed in a procedure known as wet processing or washing. Immediately after harvesting, they are poured into large containers of water. The good, high-quality coffee fruit sinks to the bottom, the rest is picked from its surface. Along with the water, the cherries are pushed through special crushing plates to remove the pulp. The seeds, coffee beans, are left to ferment, then dried in the sun and ovens. Finally, the coffee is sorted and packed in jute sacks of 60kg.

Coffee plants were introduced to Cuba in 1748. The coffee plantations are cultivated by villagers who own small areas of land. They often band together with larger companies to ensure better marketing for their coffee. Each batch of Cuban coffee has a rich history. The country exports 8,000 tonnes of it a year. Cubans love coffee, brewing it in thermoses, flavoring it with sugar and taking it with them. You can only get coffee with milk in Cuba's better hotels, as the locals drink it sweetened.
