Coffee from Peruvian Andes is popular for its natural sweetness with fruity undertones. Its full and smooth body and low acidity make it a true delicacy. It tastes great in an Irish cream brew. The coffee has a caramel flavor with a light touch of vanilla and good whiskey. When properly prepared, it is adorned with thick and elastic foam.

Origins

The coffee beans we use to prepare this flavored treat are imported from Peru. The plantations of small farmers are located high in the Andes, making it almost impossible to fertilize or treat the coffee trees with industrial products. Peruvian coffee is thus mostly considered organically grown. In the Puno region, farmers almost always plant the Typica variety. It provides an excellent harvest, though it produces low yields.

The coffee fruit, which resembles cherries in appearance and size, is harvested several times. The reason for this is to obtain the ripest possible fruit. They are processed by so-called washing, during which they are stripped of their pulp and fermented in water. The resulting coffee beans are dried in direct sunlight on concrete panes. The green-to-green-grey coffee is finally sorted, packed, and exported.

Flavoring coffee is nothing new. The addition of cardamom or mint leaves has been known for hundreds of years, as well as milk and sugar sweetening. The biggest boom in flavored coffee was in the 1970s. Flavoring is added to coffee beans in two ways – after or before roasting.

We prefer the more expensive and demanding method: the roaster sprays the coffee with a carrier oil containing flavoring agents before roasting. The aroma is easily "incorporated" into the beans during roasting and stays there for a long time.

Making Flavored Coffee in an Automatic Coffee Maker

If you intend to make flavored coffee in an automatic coffee maker with a tray, we recommend checking the instructions for the coffee maker to ensure this is possible. If the machine manufacturer does not provide any information on flavored coffee, follow these recommendations:

The natural aroma in this coffee may react with the plastic in the tray and cause it to spot on prolonged contact.

  • Always use only as much flavored coffee as you will immediately consume.
  • After preparing your flavored coffee, make your next cup with unflavored coffee.

Apply same rules when grinding flavored coffee in grinders (both manual and electric).

Instructions for preparation

Grind your coffee according to your preferred method.
Use 14ml of water per 1g of coffee. For 1 cup of coffee use 7g.
Add your coffee and pour over with boiled water (95°C).
